over the past 4-5 years the pike fishing has seriously dropped off:{ what theories do we have?

A1 JON - January 15, 2008 02:57 PM (GMT)
As far as land locked waters are concerned I personally think it may be due to an abundance of natural food, a lot of club waters nowadays are being stocked to the hilt with silver fish etc for the match anglers. Also a lot of club waters are allowing either culling of pike in order to save fish stocks, or having them removed by netting. Very sad state of affairs really as the pikes presence creates a natural balance within a water.
Just my theory anyway, may be wrong. :blink: Whats your thoughts on the subject Mike.

Do you think it's gone a bit too commercial then fellas? I suppose it's the same as any other sport when too much money gets involved :(

And culling Pike stocks can't be right can it? If I bought a lake or whatever I'd try to leave it as balanced as possible between natural fish and stocked fish ideally. Mind you though, keeping a water looking nice isn't necessarily going to pay your mortgage is it so perhaps this is why this stuff happens. If stocks cost money and Pike eat them then I can kinda see why it happens although I don't agree with culling.

Sad state of affairs but it does happen :angry:

As I've said on the one hand I can understand people wanting to make theirs a successful venue but there has to be limits and respect for life here in my opinion. I think it's a part of a much wider issue actually, this kind of 'move over nature, the humans are coming...' has been going on since time began :(

mike the pike - January 16, 2008 03:44 PM (GMT)
i am not to sure about the local fishing venues, but the norfolk broads has had some serious flooding of late:{ and it is sea water:{{ which drives the pike away(boo). on another note, if you fancy fishing the broads you only have 50 yrs before the place is under the sea:{

Nice one Mick, if you're sure we've got at least 50 years maybe even Elky will be able to make it there on time ;)

Seriously though, I've actually fished the Broads when we went there and hired a barge for my mate's Stag Do a few years ago. Didn't catch a thing (on spinners) but it was a rate laugh. Even got told off by the coppers on their little Police boat.

Apparently it might be dangerous to cast a rod out while breaking the speed limit and drinking copious amounts of beer user posted image

Do you mean a barge type thing mate? When we went there we hired a 10 man barge, like a narrow boat but it was wide because it was on the 'Broads.'

mike the pike - January 17, 2008 03:48 PM (GMT)
i think he means a little 2-4 man punt:} they are fab:} done loads of broad fishing in 1. i think it would be much better to hire one for the wkend dudster as the broads is bloody massive and will take atleast a month to navigate the whole place. give me a date dud and i would love to go:}}}

hi there
in responce to mike the pikes question my theory is that pike match fishing has a lot to do with the decline of pike catches,a few years a go about 15 i used to pike fish the drains in lincolnshire every weekend and you would aways catch if you only caught 6 fish youd be having a bad day 10-16 fish a day was usual amounts for one day ten some one decided it would be a good idea to pike match it and for a few years it worked but the presure of 40-50 anglers a weekend soon toook its toll especial when you would only normaly see about 2 so i think over fishing killed that place off,as for lakes i cant wait for all those places that are worth millions of pounds stocked to bursting with fast growing carp to get one realy big proplem that could easily wip out there entire stock which can so easily be avoided by leaving pike in their ponds fair play the pike will eat a small amount of there profit but its a small price to pay concidering they could lose the entier fishery,i dont wish the death of any animal but as long as people think they can play god the risk is still there.

That about sums it up for me, people playing God for profit without considering nature and the natural order of things.

Welcome to the forum by the way :wave:

:D i once pike fished a trout fishery called ringstead grange and we were told that every pike that was caught had to be removed and by removed they ment killed by any means possible then dumped in a drainage ditch behind a porter cabin, i knew as soon as we went out on the boat that no fish that i caught were going to die at that time i had a 6ft catfish tube which could be opened either end so i just opened up the bottom and left it hanging over the side of the boat so every pike that was caught went straight back into the trout lake to continue feeding off the fat cats money spinning scheme, result!
