Title: Angling holiday

bof - October 8, 2008 11:29 PM (GMT)
I'm off to the river Severn near Holt Fleet shortly, and am staying in a flat alongside the river, (all being well I'll be fishing from the garden some evenings :D ).
Anyone fished down there recently?
I'll be taking my standard Barbel kit, plus a float rod, just in case the river there is crawling with top quality Roach and Chub.
All advice gratefully received.

My no. 1 advice BoF : enjoy yourself fella !
Might be worth taking a pike rod too?

Just back from my Severn trip.
The flat was a cracker, right next to the river, and worth every penny:-

Fishing was from its own dock area, around 50yds long ( the full length of the garden):-

Which is a whole lot safer given the slipperyness of the silt, which is deposited on the sloping riverbank every time the river rises and falls.

Plenty of Barbel were had but the general size didnt exceed 7 to 8lb.

However I did manage to catch the odd Chub or two, this was I think the 4lb 6oz, not a long fish but very thick:-

Thats only one bedroom and the smaller one at that, the other is a double, but for some reason my camera stopped taking photos at that point.
The flash went off, it looked like a picture was taken, but it didnt store it.
All the Barbel photos and the majority of the Chub just dissapeared as well.
I didnt notice of course, and went blithly on snapping away happily. It was entirely by chance on one of the later days, that I picked up "Her Indoors" camera off the table instead of mine, or I wouldnt have had what I did of the catches.

Just below the big boat is about 80yds of great looking float water, all the way down the next doors garden length and the public boat dock in fact.
Pity I didnt bother to take a float rod.
A few bait droppers of hemp, and a 4 or 5 BB Avon float would have gone down very well from there, I suspect.

But you can only take so much gear / bait, without a holiday becoming an out and out fishing trip, and your name becoming MUD with "Her Indoors". :(

As it was the trip was just about right, a late breakfast / brunch, followed by a few hours bumbling round western Worcestershire / Herefodshire, seeing some delightful places. Then back in time for an evening meal, before settling "Her Indoors" down to watch her "soaps", whilst I got in 3 to 4 hours fishing.
That still leaves a couple of hours to walk the 90 to 120 yds along to the local pub for a swift pint or two, (should that be your thing).

BOF ;)

PS Did I mention that its just 5minutes from Larford Lakes, and for not a lot of money if you go after September, (c £220 per week)?
