I really do hope that the weather guys have got it right this time. As, according to several websites, the weather is set to get several degrees warmer by tomrrow or Tuesday, and stay warmer for the week.
I can not tell you just how I am looking forward to grabbing a few hours in weather conditions other than those that would have sent Scott of the Antarctic going for a spare set of thermals. It will be good to have a few fish "off the top" if I can get them going, my favourite Spring / Summer tactic.
Yes, there have been odd days that havent been totally rubbish, but the nights have been cold enough to put the counties weather clock back a full fortnight, perhaps more.
At least according to a fanatical gardening pal of mine.
He's one of the guys you see in an old tank top (usually a gift, and usually in holes someplace), plus brown cords and wellies. You will see him happily tramping around his allotment pushing a family size wheelbarrow around, or down on his knees "weeding out".
He dissapears for hours for hours down there, happily "muck spreading", (I call it going all "Titchmash" on us).
He just shakes his head at my fishing habit, and smiles greatly when he hands over some of his surplus onions to me later in the year.
Well I call them onions, I do that losely, as I have Match centrepins that are smaller than the things he grows.
So when he says everything is at least two to three weeks behind, I believe him. Furthermore, he is not at all optomistic that this Summer is going to be any good. It's something to do with a big upwelling of a particular current in the Pacific of all places. He believes that the Summer is due to be cool and wet again.
Anyway, today he was digging and cleaning out drains all around his beloved allotment, making sure that any surface water can get away very quickly, as last years "bit of wet" completely knocked out a lot of his main crop stuff.
It played merry hell with my fishing, I know that.
So I know this is premature, and a bit pessimistic, but I for one will be out grabbing any small window of fishing opportunity that I can get, over the next few weeks.
If all his preparation proves to be utter bull.... well then, I will just have had a few extra hours fishing on an evening, or early morning. Then if I catch some fish when everyone else is watching t.v. or having breakfast, alls well. I can then remember those fish when it gets round to a, so called, Summer weekend. When, due to the weather, all I can do is watch the rivers rise, and get ready to visit us again, instead of us visiting them.
BOF ;)
Lets hope your mates predictions don`t come true. Unfortunately gardeners and farming types tend to have a pretty good idea as to what to expect especially if they are of the older generation. Today is very nice, so far so good. ;)
The more ancient and creaky amongst us will remember a bloke on Callendar TV called Frogget who used to do an alternative weather forecast.
He regularly would embarrass the bright young things at the Met. Office, with their computer modelling of the weather, using the way plants grew, seaweed, and watching nature.
I hope he's wrong as well, and we have a cracking Summer.
But lets make the best of what we have for now, and get out there every night this week, even if its only 6.30 till 10ish.
I for one am off to bait up a couple of likely spots this afternoon, in preparation.
BOF ;)
i hear you there....when in rome!!!
The temperature is going up, the fish are becoming more active.
Particularly UP in the water.
So look at fishing the near margins with a pop up fished just under the surface, (zig rigged), and see what transpires.
BOF ;)
I think I must be a jinx. :(
Every time I feel the temperatures going up I get all optomistic. Then the thing drop like a stone again.
There was a 5 degree drop yesterday, thats nearly a 40% ! The Carp must be wondering whats going on.
I may stop Carp fishing and go back to Pike fishing, at least I can keep warm throwing plugs about.
BOF ;)
